Boop-Oop-A-Doop by HammersonHoek Boop-Oop-A-Doop by HammersonHoek
Betty Boop picture for The Autumn Society of Philadelphia's upcoming "Golden Age of Comics and Animation" art show.

For the inspiration, I used the earliest Betty Boop design by Grim Natwick. That's the character design seen in the first few Betty Boop cartoons ("Mysterious Mose" for example).

Betty Boop (C) King Features Syndicate, Inc. / Fleischer Studios, Inc.

Oh, and Jippo here! How sweet! I guess someone is going to have his teeth removed or tonsils grown. ha-ha... Koko’s ink drop looking like an ambryo, dead candle—everything in this picture is awesome!

Thank you! :) I'm very much inspired by those old black & white cartoons from '30s, and their combination of spooky and wacky stuff.

This is just fantastic.
This is, in my opinion, these are the Fleischers' best films, as well as their Popeye's and you captured all the fun and craziness and added your own twist. I really love ths!
I also love how Koko is starring at Betty

Great! "Mysterious Mose" is a great cartoon indeed, and you made a nice tribute to "dog-ears" era Betty.

i never noticed this one before...

This reminds me of umm lets see.. im a betty boop exspert... kinda
the hairstyle looks like from mysterious mose, so i would say mysterious mose.

she looked like that in bum bandit aswell, and a bit in bimbos initation, i cant say dizzy dishes becuse she was more of a helen kane style... like barnicle bill

in silly scandals her nose had become un buttoned

Thanks! That's all correct, you are a Betty Boop expert  :)
I'd say, "Mysterious Mose" was a main inspiration, both for the Betty design (hairstyle especially), and for the general atmosphere of the piece. Bimbo is some kind of anachronism here, because I used his later (and most famous) model, instead of the one that appeared together with Betty in these earliest cartoons.

I <3 this one!!!

I personally think Betty was way more appealing as a pup. It prob has something to do with the fact that Natwick has more control over her design at that phase of here sex-istence.

Thanks!

>> I personally think Betty was way more appealing as a pup <<

Me too, she was way more expressive in her first cartoons. Pity that Natwick left the studio so early (he went to Ub Iwerks afterwards). Later on, her design became too symmetrical and stiff, though her cartoons remained absolutely great, up until the end of 1934 (the pre-Code period).
